David Dale Gallery & Studios are pleased to present Play It as It Lies, an exhibition of new work by Harry Meadley, including collaborations with the artists Matthew Crawley, LEEDS UNITED, Hardeep Pandhal, Liv Preston and David Steans.

Play It as It Lies contains all the works conceived, and able to be produced, by Meadley from the moment he was invited to have a solo exhibition at David Dale Gallery until the shipping date, a period of approximately five months. Although inescapably a curatorial framework, the structure of the exhibition is an attempt by the artist to not self-curate, but rather to show everything – for better or worse. In this respect the exhibition becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, in which some works are generated by the show itself and then furthermore by the ever accumulating works. For instance, the seventh work to be conceived was to order the works list in the order the works were conceived, the twelfth work was made first but is physically the oldest work, the thirty-sixth work has been shown first, the forty-first work references the tenth work, the forty-fifth work takes place after the forty-forth work, the forty-eighth work is actually titled ’50th work’, the eleventh work cannot be made until after the last work, yet the last work may or may not have been conceived at the time of writing this press release.

A publication will follow the exhibition, titled Out of Bounds. The publication will present notes from the artist’s notebook relating to all the works conceived that were unable to be realised for varying reasons, in addition to re-contextualising the exhibition through commissioned texts and installation images.

On Saturday 13th April at 12pm Harry Meadley will lead a walkthrough of the exhibition expected to last up to five hours, however, visitors are invited to come and go as they please.

To accompany the exhibition Harry Meadley has produced the edition A Lesson in Presents / A Lesson in Presence, a charity tea towel consisting of the self-portraits of students currently studying on the Foundation Diploma Fine Art Pathway at Leeds College of Art. See below for further details.
